Scaly-breasted lorikeets (Trichoglossus chlorolepidotus) are little green and gold bullet birds that zip through the sky between tall eucalyptus trees in search of tasty nectar. Like their rainbow cousins, their range also covers much of Australia’s east coast, but they tend to forage more in the treetops, so seeing these guys occasionally come down for a drink or a nosh on some apple is like finding wild emeralds in a certain mining videogame.

I have a pair that stops by the birdbath occasionally and I get so excited to see them because normally the rainbows show up to boss them around and chase them off. :’)
