Superb Lyrebird Australian Bird Die-cut Sticker, Male

When only the sound of a car alarm will round out your musical score *chef’s kiss*.

Ever wandered along a leafy Australian east coast rainforest trail and heard an uncountable number of bird calls seemingly strung together and thought, ‘wow, there’s a lot of cool birds here!’ Well, you might be surprised to learn it’s just one bird, one of the world’s greatest mimics, the superb lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae). (Also, chances are there are still a lot of cool birds in the area, as lyrebirds learn from their fellow feathered friends after all!)

These gorgeous songsters spend much of the day scratching amongst leaf litter for tasty worms (and reportedly fungi as well.) While both males and female mimic, only the boys have the gorgeous lyre-like tail feathers that they shimmer over their heads in elaborate mating displays.

I’m always impressed by how close you can get to these stunning creatures right in the middle of a performance. I also find it really fun to pick out all the different bird calls in their songs, as it creates a beautiful tapestry of all the birds you could find in the surrounding forests. <3
